Wine shop |
They say every
time a door closes, a window opens. Or is it every time a door closes, a glass
of wine is poured? Yeah, I like that better. In this case, the "door
closing" belonged to M&R Drug's wine shop in Troy, which we covered in
a previous column. That leaves a void, but does not reflect the vibrant growth
of wine retailing north of the Gem City's borders. What follows is by no means
a comprehensive list, but witness, for example, the subtle blossoming of the
humble little wine shop/deli known as "The Little Store," on 7325
Peters Pike in Butler Twp.
This looks like
a gazillion other carryouts from outside, but proves once again that it's
what's inside that counts. The selection surprises with its bottles of 2012
Caymus Special Select Cabernet Sauvignon ($102), 2012 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet
Sauvignon ($60) and 2012 Jordan Cabernet ($34). These folks, obviously, are
serious about their wines.
"These
folks," it turns out, are Eric Jerardi of local blues-band fame, and his
wife, Cheryl. Their shop has been there, south of Little York Road, for two
years, but Jerardi is really stepping up his wine presence. Or head east from
there into Huber Heights, where Dan Farrell has resumed drop-in wine tastings
every Saturday at the Gourmet Wine House, 7683 Old Troy Pike. Farrell has
always kept a healthy stock of fine wines, but the selection has never been
better, and the Saturday tastings are a welcome addition.
More tastings?
Absolutely. The new-kid-on-the-block award goes to the Oregon Emporium, which
is next to Pacchia's at 400 E. Fifth St., in the Oregon District. While other
wine shops fall over themselves offering Saturday samplings, this store has Sunday
afternoon drop-in wine tastings, from 2-4 p.m., though not every Sunday. Keep
an eye on our wine-tastings section.
Sure, there's
plenty of wine-related happenings going on south and east of our fair city. But
other parts of town can uncork a few surprises of their own. They say every time a door closes, a
window opens. Or is it every time a door closes, a glass of wine is poured? Yeah, I like
that better.
